Hadith in Arabic
These sayings from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) are also commonly known as Hadith or Ahadith in plural. Hadith is considered a sacred text, which means ‘narrative’ or ‘report’ in Arabic. It is a record of the words and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), his family and his companions. It is the second most important text in Islam, next to the Quran. It is key in developing Islamic Jurisprudence, and regarded as an important tool for understanding the Quran and commentaries (or Tafsir) written on it.
Who is Prophet Muhammad ?
For the benefits of my Non-Muslim readers, Prophet Muhammad was the last Prophet that Allah s.w.t. sent down to spread the teachings of Islam. Prior to his mission as a prophet, he grew up and raised by his Uncle who was the respected tribe of Quraysh. He was raised illiterate, unable to write or read, and remained so till his death. Despite that, he grew up known to be truthful, honest, trustworthy, generous and sincere.
At the age of 40, Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation from God through the Angel Gabriel (Jibrail). The revelation continued for the next 23 years, and they collectively known as the The Holy Quran.
A Brief History of his 23 years’ Prophecy Mission
During his mission to spread the teachings of Islam and The Holy Quran, it came with lots of tribulation and challenges, in which, many times he was aimed for persecution by his enemies and the unbelievers. The persecution grew so fierce that in the 622, God gave Prophet Muhammad and his group of followers the command to migrate. This migration from Makkah and to the city of Medinah, some 420km to the north, marks the beginning of the Muslim Calendar.
Several years later, Prophet Muhammad and his followers were able to return to Makkah and make peace with their enemies. In fact, Prophet Muhammad forgave them and many respected his huge compassion and eventually accepted Islam. Throughout his years of mission and till his death at 63, Islam became widely accepted in the greater part of the Arabian Peninsula. It exponentially grew for the next 100 years after this death, as Islam spread to Spain in the West and as far East as China.
Why The Rapid Growth of Acceptance for Islam?
One of the main reasons why Islam became widely accepted around the world was the very reason how Prophet Muhammad preached and carry himself to the people. He was the perfect role model of how a Muslim should portray themselves – honest, just, merciful, compassionate, truthful and brave human being.
It was also due to the truth and clarity of the doctrine in which Islam calls for faith in only one God, Who is the only one worthy of worship.
Muslims understand clearly that Prophet Muhammad is just a man, and they do not worship him. Reason was he was careful to teach the message just as God prescribed and warned his followers not to adulate him the way Jesus, son of Mary was praised. Nonetheless, he is a man worthy of our utmost respect and love. He loved his humanity so much that he would weep out of fear for them. He loved his Ummah (community) with such deep and profound devotion that God remarked of his love for us in Quran.
“Verily, there has come unto you a Messenger (Muhammad) from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should receive any injury or difficulty. He (Muhammad) is anxious over you (to be rightly guided, to repent to God, and beg Him to pardon and forgive your sins, in order that you may enter Paradise and be saved from the punishment of the Hell-fire), for the believers he is full of pity, kind, and merciful.” (Quran 9:128)
