Mufti Menk Quotes

Bumped with Mufti Ismail Menk on 24th March 2016 when he was on a stopover in Singapore before flying off to KL.

His videos are widely shared across different online channels such as Youtube & Facebook as well as his quotes on Instagram, Pinterest & Tumblr, as he dishes out timely advice and good reminders on how Muslims should carry themselves, especially in this today’s era where Islam is often being put in a spotlight.

Who is Mufti Menk?

Ismail ibn Musa Menk, also known as Mufti Menk, is a Muslim cleric and Grand Mufti of Zimbabwe. He is also the director of the Daarul Ilm (Islamic Educational Centre) of the Majlisul Ulama.

Author’s Note

As I was working on this write-up, I received news that the Singapore government decided to ban Mufti Menk from coming to the country for safety reasons pertaining to his thoughts on greeting believers of other faiths during festivals such as Christmas and Deepavali. It took me some time to decide if I should proceed posting this, and I decided to do so.

When I first started, one of the objectives of QOI is to share the beauty of Islam through meaningful quotes and words of wisdom, in line with the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and the words of Allah s.w.t in the Holy Quran.

Mufti Menk has long been advocating peace & tolerance in his lectures and his words of wisdom has benefited many Muslims around the world today. Now – don’t get me wrong that I’m siding on his thoughts above-mentioned. In fact, I don’t – if it holds true. Especially in countries like Singapore which thrives for the past 52 years in a multi-racial and multi-religious society, any ideologies that aim to cause divide among societies have to be taken seriously and necessary actions have to been taken.

However, I feel there’s plenty of positive takeaways we can learn from his lectures which is invaluable not to share with you guys. Whether or not his words hold true or merely being taken out of context, I’m not here to pass judgement nor I would like to. Importantly, we can identify the positives and filter out the negatives, where deem necessary.

(On Friendship)

“Love your friend moderately lest he becomes your enemy one day, and hate your enemy moderately lest he becomes your friend one day!” [Tirmidhi] When we get extremely close to people and lower our guard by letting them know every detail of our life, trusting them with everything, a day can come when we regret because they can hold us ransom with what they know about us if the friendship is broken for some reason. Islam is knowledge based. The more you know about it, the more you will love it. The less you know about it, the more you will dwindle.

When a bird is alive it eats ants, yet when it dies, the ants eat it. Circumstances can change at anytime and the tables usually turn over a period of time. Do not oppress, despise or hurt anyone during your lifetime. You may be powerful today but remember, time is more powerful than you! Just like one tree makes a million matchsticks, yet when the time comes then only a single match is needed to burn a million trees.

“Knowledge is an ocean that has no coast.” So if anyone thinks they know it all, then what they have is something besides knowledge. Keep swimming! Every second of every minute of every hour of every week of every month of every year of every decade of our lives is an opportunity to do better than the previous one.

Mufti Menk Quotes
(On Negative People)

Stay away from those who mess with your mind. They’re the ones who say and do things just to upset you. Apology is the farthest from their mind.

What motivates some to criticise & put others down? Is it to feel they’re one up on the other person? Or hide their inferiority complex?

Not everyone will get to know the real you. People will talk and criticize based on what they hear and what they think you are. So be it.

Mufti Menk Quotes
(Have Faith In Yourself)

Do not be selfish in prayer by praying for yourself. Pray for others too and stand a better chance of having your own prayers answered.

Pray for others. Don’t be selfish & pray for yourself. Want for others what you want for yourself. Feel your heart grow with love.

No matter what hardship you may be going through, never underestimate the power of prayer with conviction.

Never underestimate the power of prayer! Constant prayer, with full conviction, without loss of hope no matter how prolonged it may be, really does create miracles! What seems ‘impossible’ for us is simple for the Almighty. Many have already see this in their lives! We are also taught to maintain closeness to the Almighty at times of ease & then during hardship He has promised to come to our aid. Let us know be from those who only worship when they are suffering or when their lives are chaotic.

Get up to pray in the dark when all are asleep and see how your path is lit and your life begins to shine.

At times we may not be able to help those in need except through prayer. Do not underestimate its power.

Mufti Menk Quotes
(On Self-Control)

Don’t let your temper control you. A strong person controls his temper.

When you learn to discipline your tongue, you’ll stop scrutinizing, judging and condemning others. You’ll then focus on your own weaknesses.

Beware the limits to joking and teasing. Beyond that, they become offensive and hurtful.

If people display bad character towards us, it should make us drop our good character as a result.

If you are right, there is no need to get angry. And if you’re wrong, you have no right to be angry.

You can’t be happy till you learn to ignore gossips and unkind words hurled at you. If you have the Almighty you’re in a happy state.

Admit it. We are all impatient. We want results right now to everything that’s going on in our lives. The reality is – it doesn’t work that way. Stay on course. The Almighty will make sure the moment comes. Not one second sooner!

When a person we love falls ill, we say it is a test, but when a person we dislike falls ill, we say it is a punishment. When a person we love is afflicted with hardship, we say it is because he is a good person, but when a person we dislike is afflicted with hardship, we say it is because he has wronged others. Be very careful of handing out the wisdom of the Almighty behind his Decree based on your desire.

Be in the company of those who boost your spirituality and motivate you to do good than those who make you feel low and unworthy.
